In Zion National Park, Cottonwood trees provide food, a place to roost and nest, and a shaded habitat for Zion’s wildlife. In the 1930’s levees were built to protect the paved road in Zion Canyon and to keep the Zion Lodge from being damaged by spring floods. Unfortunately, the levees have dried out the habitat. Cottonwood seeds can’t thrive in this dry environment. Cottonwoods won’t last long unless the levees are removed.
