Scientists are uncertain how long Joshua Tree have existed, but reasonable estimates are between 3 and 14 million years.

Joshua Trees may not live much longer due to global warming. High temperatures, fire, and low precipitation are making this world a hard place for the trees to live.

This Joshua Tree fell in April of 2020. It is likely to be about 1,000 years old. This photograph was taken in January of 2021. The leaves still show green and the fallen tree still shows life. The surrounding clonal trees are likely still communicating with the fallen tree’s roots. The roots are connected asexually by rhizome growth. The fallen tree hasn't died. The roots hold potent ground; from an old stump, new life can grow.
